  18. <p>    Why the U.S. Supreme Court refused last week to hear the case
  19. of John McGann is not nearly as clear as the possible
  20. repercussions of that decision. McGann, a Houston music-store
  21. clerk, had his medical insurance suddenly cut from $1 million
  22. to $5,000 after his employer learned he had AIDS. An unusual
  23. alliance of American Medical Association officials and AIDS
  24. activists says the court's inaction may embolden other employers
  25. who promise medical benefits to retroactively refuse insurance
  26. payouts . McGann did not live to hear the bad news: he died in
  27. June 1991.
